Loss of motive power due to engine failure post recall remedy
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 36 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V274. In each VOQ, the engine had the recall remedy completed prior to the reported failure incident. Recall 25V-274 addresses vehicles equipped with a L87 6.2L V8 gas engine that experienced engine damage or failure. Recall 25V-274’s remedy includes an engine inspection. Based on the results of the inspection the vehicle will receive an oil change to a higher viscosity oil or an engine replacement. The complaints received allege failures of both remedies. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of the remedy for Recall 25V-274. Loss of motive power due to engine failure
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001). GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274. This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. Loss of motive power due to engine failure
On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007). The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that there was an abnormal moaning and grinding sound coming from the vehicle. The contact became aware of the uneven wear on the tires. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle previously had an alignment and fluid flush performed. The contact stated that the failure was related to TSB: 21-NA-028 – (Rear Differential Moan/Chatter). The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.

Vehicle is a 2022 GMC Yukon Denali with the 6.2L L87 V8, covered by NHTSA Recall 25V-274 (GM N252494001). The recall remedy was performed. The engine passed the dealer inspection and was given the higher-viscosity 0W-40 oil remedy rather than an engine replacement. On 05/26/2026, at approximately 43,000 miles, the vehicle suffered a sudden engine knock while being driven by my wife. At the same time, the dash displayed Service ESC and Service Traction Control warnings, the vehicle's speed fluctuated on its own without driver input, and the air suspension cycled up and down while the vehicle was in motion. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed a failed lifter with resulting camshaft damage and repaired it under the powertrain warranty. The vehicle was out of service approximately fifteen days. Shortly after the vehicle was returned, it began displaying a "Theft Attempted" message on the dash every day. I reported this to the dealer in writing on 06/15/2026 with a photograph at 43,898 miles. The dealer stated it was unlikely to be related and did not scan or diagnose it. On 07/14/2026, approximately 560 miles after the repair, the vehicle became inoperable and had to be towed to the dealer a second time. It is currently at the dealer and has not yet been diagnosed. The unexpected loss of power, speed fluctuation, and stability-control failure at road speed present a serious crash risk. This vehicle passed the 25V-274 inspection remedy and then experienced a valvetrain failure regardless, which is directly relevant to Recall Query RQ26001 into the adequacy of that remedy.

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Yukon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, an abnormal knocking and ticking sound emanated from the engine before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with total engine failure, requiring replacement. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact stated that the current engine was a replacement engine from a previous failure, which was tested prior to installation but also failed. Additionally, the contact stated after the failure, the transmission could not be shifted into Neutral, forcing the tow operator to drag the vehicle onto the flatbed truck. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the latest failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.

My 2022 GMC Yukon (6.2L L87 V8, VIN [XXX]) is covered by recall 25V-274 / GM N252494000, "L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion." In May 2025, at about 65,800 miles, the engine lost power and shut down while I was driving, then developed a loud knocking noise and an intermittent low-oil-pressure warning. The dealer (The Faricy Boys Automotive, Salida, CO) found excessive metal in the oil sample and replaced the entire engine under this recall in June 2025. The original engine serial was [XXX]; the replacement serial is [XXX]. On XXX, at about 93,000 miles — roughly 27,000 miles after the recall repair — the REPLACEMENT engine GM installed began making the same knocking noise. A dealer (Turner Automotive, Montrose, CO) has confirmed the engine is failing and has ordered a second replacement engine. The recall remedy GM performed did not fix the defect; the engine GM installed to cure the recall is now exhibiting the same failure mode (knocking / loss of propulsion). When the engine failed on XXX, GM Roadside Assistance refused to cover towing despite the engine's replacement coverage, and I had to pay roughly $484 out of pocket to tow the vehicle about 74 miles to the nearest dealer. This is a safety issue: the defect causes loss of motive power, and in my first failure the vehicle shut down while I was driving. I am reporting this because the recall remedy itself appears defective, consistent with NHTSA Recall Query RQ26001 regarding the adequacy of the remedy for campaign 25V-274. the full audio system went out on the vehicle at 40,000 - the amp and safety warnings that come through the car audio failed and took 2 days to replace at my expense for the amp to have the features active

the sensor on the left side of the vehicle fails to detect as it should. A warning indicator comes on the screen when you start the vehcile

with no warning ,the GMC 6.2L engine failed on my family trip to Colorado. The engine seized at HWY speeds, stopped running, failed to restart and had to be towed to local dealer. This issue is a known GMC defect with numerous reports and a safety recall issue. I was fortunate to be able to move offer in hwy traffic and get to the shoulder where my situation took 8 hours travel time to continue my family trip.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall. Certain vehicles may have a condition which can cause the fuel pump power control module to fail. If this were to occur, fuel flow to the engine could be interrupted. Dealers will replace the fuel pump power control module.
