Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

ACCELERATING ON INTERSTATE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN COMPLETY LOST ENGINE POWER. ENGINE WOULD CONTINUE RUNNING, BUT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. COULD HAVE EASILY GOTTEN INTO A WRECK IF THERE HAD BEEN MORE TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE. ENDED UP GETTING TOWED AND HAVING TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE UNIT WHICH COST ALMOST $1000, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH A VERY BAD OUTCOME IF TRAFFIC HAD BEEN HEAVIER.

I KEEP GETTING A MESSAGE THAT THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM NEEDS SERVICE EVEN THOUGH THE TIRES HAVE THE CORRECT PRESSURE. I BELIEVE THERE IS A DEFECT IN THIS SAFETY RELATED SYSTEM. IT IS AN ISSUE THAT MANY VOLVO OWNERS HAVE REPORTED, YET VOLVO CONTINUALLY FAILS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. *TR

2009 VOLVO S60 AWD - WHEN FILLING WITH GASOLINE AT VARIOUS GAS STATIONS, GASOLINE OVERFLOWS AND SPILLS OUT OF THE FUEL FILLER NECK WHEN THE TANK IS FULL. THIS IS WITH THE LOCK MECHANISM ENGAGED ON THE GAS PUMP HANDLE. I HAVE OBSERVED THIS AT MULTIPLE GAS STATIONS AND DIFFERENT PUMPS AT THOSE GAS STATIONS. I HAVE TAKEN OTHER VEHICLES TO THE SAME STATIONS AND PUMPS AND FILLED THEIR TANKS IN THE SAME FASHION, AND THE LOCK MECHANISM ON THE PUMP HANDLE AUTOMATICALLY DISENGAGES AND NO GAS OVERFLOWS WHEN THE TANK IS FULL AND REACHES CAPACITY. I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THIS VEHICLE ONCE PREVIOUSLY IN SEPTEMBER 2009 AND THEY FOUND NO ISSUE. I AM TIRED OF DEALING WITH IT AND WORRIED ABOUT A FIRE OCCURRING DUE TO THIS. THE GAS SPILLS OUT AND ON TO THE PAINT ON THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE GROUND. *TR

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
